Engine replaced 7 days after diagnosis. Whole car due to be replaced by week 19 (2002) build.

engine problem: extreme wear of no.2 crankshaft bearing shell (photo attached below), reasons suspected, either (i) manufacturing defect in the shell, i.e. insufficient heat treatment to harden material, (ii) oil starvation at the crankcase, or (iii) over-fuelling leading to fuel bypassing the piston rings and diluting lubrication at the bearing shell.
